The detail on this building is beautiful! Look on the right side of the painting where the detail is complete and the illusion of depth. I feel this painting does not need to be hung out of hands reach. It needs to be touched and experienced.
After all the sculpting, carving and sanding, painting begins. It feels like a coloring book because I have already worked out all the design and composition and I am filling in the colors. I can see why the adult coloring books are so therapeutic and relaxing
This process has involved a palette knife and cake decorating tools for application. Also used dental tools and clay tools for carving. This works best the day after modeling paste is applied. I may post a video showing both of these processes.
I usually use a palette knife, clay and dental tools for this part of the painting, but thanks to my friend Stephen Watkins in sharing a video with an artist using cake decorating tools I have incorporated these in my process. I am sure I have a few days work ahead of me for this part of the painting. I plan on doing some carving on some of the decorative areas of the wall.
This is a very rough sketch to be modified and must finish perfect... Such a large format can be unforgiving. Definitely have to recheck all measurements and perspective before I lay down any modeling paste or paint. I can see which sculptural elements I would like to develop at this point. Break time!
Use a Proportional Scale to grid the canvas. My original image is 10 x 8. My final canvas will be 60 x 48. That is 600%. I can use my little drawing for my grid but I will have to refer to the high res photo on my computer for the details
Please follow the progression of my current Project. This photo was taken in Vienna by my husband. I loved the architecture, but I love the angle and drama even more. I will be using my sculptural painting technique which involves modeling paste applied with a palette knife and manipulated with clay and dental tools. Then layers of paint are applied with impasto technique, sometimes with a brush other times with a palette knife.
