Painting Progression: Forgotten Tennessee

Started new painting so I decided to share my progression. This is from a photo from very talented photographer Jerry Winnett.

After sketching design on canvas, started underpainting to establish composition and values. Next, modeling paste will be added to add texture to elements in the foreground

Applied first layer of modeling paste. See you tomorrow!

Started adding paint over the modeling paste. Switched the windows from what is in the photo to change the focal point.

Painting Progression Continues….covering all the modeling paste with base color. Will continue to add layers of paint after this process.

Started new window project with sketch on canvas and began adding modeling paste with various palette knives.

Continued adding modeling paste over entire canvas to represent texture of stone.

Sketch from photograph. Crop image aesthetically for better design on canvas. Transfer design to canvas. 

Apply modeling paste with a palette knife and begin painting

Finish painting.  Accentuate tree to show perspective of cliff side.

After completing an initial sketch I transferred this image on a non-flexible board

I am experimenting with different types of joint compound on a board as opposed to non-flexible modeling paste

Almost ready for painting.  Need to add more details and leaves after this layer is completely dry. I use two types of joint compound: one is very spongy and harder to sculpt; one is more the consistency of modeling paste. So far only minor cracking as it dries.
