Painting Progression: Forgotten Tennessee

Started new painting so I decided to share my progression. This is from a photo from very talented photographer Jerry Winnett.

After sketching design on canvas, started underpainting to establish composition and values. Next, modeling paste will be added to add texture to elements in the foreground

Applied first layer of modeling paste. See you tomorrow!

Started adding paint over the modeling paste. Switched the windows from what is in the photo to change the focal point.

Painting Progression Continues….covering all the modeling paste with base color. Will continue to add layers of paint after this process.

Trying to finish this painting for the Art Studio Tour. Big undertaking since it is so detailed.

Finally finished! Can’t believe this took me so long to finish. i loved getting lost in all the distortions on the reflected glass.

After completing an initial sketch I transferred this image on a non-flexible board

I am experimenting with different types of joint compound on a board as opposed to non-flexible modeling paste

Almost ready for painting.  Need to add more details and leaves after this layer is completely dry. I use two types of joint compound: one is very spongy and harder to sculpt; one is more the consistency of modeling paste. So far only minor cracking as it dries.

Refining Details While Working on Brickwork

Still laying bricks...I have never been this immersed in a painting. Thought this would be monotonous, but there is something therapeutic about building this structure brick by brick.  

Step #5 Painting Begins

After all the sculpting, carving and sanding, painting begins. It feels like a coloring book because I have already worked out all the design and composition and I am filling in the colors.  I can see why the adult coloring books are so therapeutic and relaxing
